The Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, Fla., metro area added approximately 181,000 residents to the 100-year floodplain over the period ending in 2016, the most of any region nationally, followed by Tampa-St. Some other counties without digital mapping data were excluded from our calculations. Governing analyzed FEMA flood maps and census tract population estimates to gauge the amount of development occurring in these areas. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) identifies areas that have a 1% chance of being inundated by flooding in any given year, known as 100-year floodplains. ![]() Despite the risks and long-term ramifications of climate change and sea-level rise, their numbers continue to increase.
