![]() Why were they falling down you ask? Well, because the drywall was crumbling of course!! Don’t ask me why, but it was, and all of the coat hooks were falling out of the wall along with the coats and snowpants! It was a MESS!! So We Begin Here is the mudroom/laundry room with one wall finished. If I could get that under control, we at least wouldn’t be tripping over boots and shoes and coats that were falling down. It hit me that starting with the coat wall in the mudroom would be a great place to start. The challenge was to do an accent wall in our home, and to post the project on HomeTalk. I had an opportunity back in November to partner with Wagner Paint Sprayers. The next thing that helped was a challenge. What a relief that was! However, we were still left with quite a mess, although now, it really is just a mudroom/laundry room, with a little storage! The Next Help ![]() Also, most extra homeschool and craft supplies went into that new space. This allowed us to have a designated space for our sewing machine and fabric stash. You can read about that here, here, here, and here. One major thing we did was put up our red metal barn. However, now I think we have it to a place of being quite functional! I am so pleased with it now and it just makes me so doggone happy!! One thing that helped So the total length of the mudroom/laundry room is 18.5 which doesn’t sound too bad, but that area from the door to the laundry area is only 5′ wide. The dimensions of the room are 8×9 at the widest part and 5×9.5 at the narrow part. This meant all of our sewing supplies, fabric, extra homeschool and craft stuff…you name it, it was probably crammed somewhere in this room! However, it was also used as a laundry room and overflow pantry area, along with storage for anything and everything that didn’t have a home. One that needs to be gutted and redone I might add. There is a bathroom right inside the door as well. It is very narrow at the mudroom area, right where everyone comes in dropping muddy/snowy boots and coats in the winter, and wet swimming suits and towels in the summer. The shape is also awkward, it is the back entrance to the house, and it kind of bottle necks at the door. For one, it’s pretty small for a family our size. ![]() So what was the problem with this mudroom/laundry room? Well, there were a few things. I wish I would have taken a picture of it before, it was ten times worse than this if you can imagine! The Bane of my Existenceĭramatic? Perhaps, but if you’ve ever had a space in your home that was out of control, you know what I mean! This room has brought me to tears more times than I care to admit…and I’m not really a cryer! This is actually after we started, and some of the stuff was moved out. When the family steps off the slopes, they can clean up in a mudroom built to stand up to harsh wear and tear.In this post I show you how we took our smallish mudroom/laundry room/pantry storage area from a total wreck to a functional space! I hope this inspires you to rethink a space that gives you grief! Will they want to store boots and hockey attire here in the winter?" In HGTV Dream Home 2011, the mudroom features floor-to-ceiling, locker-style cabinetry that stores ski equipment and other winter gear. "Do they want this to be just a 'utility' entrance for family members and pets, or will this be the primary entry/exit to the home? If so, it needs to maintain a neater, more elegant appearance," she says. According to Susan Howell of Howell Custom Building Group, the homeowner should first make a list of everything they plan on storing in the mudroom and how they want it to look and flow with the rest of the home. Much like choosing the function of a spare room, a mudroom should be well thought out and have an ultimate purpose in the home. ![]()
